Why it is dangerous to drop a smartphone on a plane, experts said

13 December 2021

Experts explained the danger of a smartphone that fell during the flight and why you can’t move your seat on the plane in case of loss of the gadget,

The most dangerous place where the phone falls is on the side of the seat. This, according to employees of the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority, can lead to a fire and a fire on board the aircraft.

“Smartphones can fall into the mechanisms of the chair and crack when shifted. This is fraught with damage to the lithium battery of the device, which often causes a fire or even an explosion,” experts say.

Just such a case almost became a tragedy during a flight to Melbourne on the liner of the Australian airline Qantas. One of the passengers’ phone fell under the chair, and when he tried to get it, the handset began to smolder. The crew of the plane rushed to extinguish the fire, and the pilot was forced to redirect the plane to an emergency landing in Sydney.

“Passengers should remember not to move their seat in case of phone loss during the flight, and always seek help from flight attendants. It is also necessary to warn flight attendants that your phone is damaged,” the experts add.

It is noted that this is the only such incident in recent times. In August of this year, a mobile phone also caught fire in the cabin of an Alaska Airlines plane, which led to an evacuation.
