Fountains with drinking water and toilets were installed in the Charyn Canyon

17 September 2021

Information steles, sign posts, placards with information about routes, flora and fauna were installed in the Charyn Canyon, as well as drinking fountains and special places for recreation were equipped.

In total, more than 50 new infrastructure facilities have been installed. On the busiest route in the Valley of Castles, three free drinking fountains are installed for visitors, located on the upper observation deck, in the middle of the route and near the river itself. Underground containers made of food-grade plastic with a volume of three thousand liters each are replenished with drinking water extracted from a well in the village of Chunja. Inside the structure, the water undergoes a multi-stage purification with two ultraviolet lamps and four filters. Each fountain is equipped with two taps – for drinking and for collecting water. The structures are provided with electricity thanks to solar panels.

There are also rest points along the upper route: two observation decks with gazebos with benches, and another one near the parking lot. Three grottoes are located along the lower route of the Valley of Castles. Benches are also installed inside the grottoes and natural ventilation is provided, which allows to ventilate the structure. The shape and color scheme of the grottoes are made in accordance with the environment.

Also in the park there are:

– two steles: a large sign at the entrance to the canyon and another one in front of the checkpoint;

– 12 information boards with information about the origin of the canyon, its flora, fauna and climate;

– two information boards with historical facts about the national park at each grotto, along the lower path of the Valley of Castles and one at the Charyn River;

– information board and 11 signs at the parking lot indicating the distance to infrastructure facilities, as well as 12 warning signs on dangerous sections of routes.

In addition, bins with the option of separate garbage collection and latrines were installed, where options for low-mobility groups of the population are provided. They are installed on the upper and lower routes. Inside the latrines there are eco-friendly “dry” toilets with economical water consumption technology.

It is noted that the new facilities were installed for private investment, the funds of the republican and local budgets were not used.

It should be recalled that in April 2021, investments in the amount of 14.5 billion tenge were attracted to implement the Concept of the development of ecological tourism in the national parks “Altyn-Emel”, “Kolsai Kolderi” and “Charyn”. Of these, 4.5 billion tenge is allocated for the Charyn National Park. The competitive requirements announced by the ministry implied the construction of tourist and recreational facilities: a visit center, an ethnoaul, a playground, a mobile food point, a glamping and recreational area, a pedestrian bridge over the Sharyn River. The feasibility of building a zip-line attraction was also studied.
