A rare black stork was captured on a camera installed by inspectors of the Markakolsky Reserve. Unique shots are published in the reserve’s social networks.
In the photo and video, you can see a bird resting near the Poplar River (a small tributary of Lake Markakol). Employees of the reserve note that black storks usually arrive here in the spring, in mid-April – early May. “Late migrants” are observed until the beginning of June. Autumn migration in most birds begins in late August – early September.
The black stork (Latin Ciconia nigra) is a bird from the stork family. It is listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, as well as Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Tajikistan. A large, long-legged, long-necked bird, a complete copy of the well-known white stork. Most of the plumage is black with a purple and green tint. The underside of the body is white. The beak, bare skin around the eyes and legs are crimson-red. There are no similar species. Males and females are colored the same, weigh about three kilograms.
This species lives in the forest zone of Eurasia. It inhabits mountainous areas with meadows located near shallow water (no further than 10-15 kilometers from the nest). In the water area of Lake Markakol, the bird is observed everywhere. Local residents of the village of Urunhaika can observe a stork on the shore of the lake near the settlement. It breeds in separate pairs.
