Why travel with old clothes, flight attendants told

29 April 2022

The profession of a flight attendant, perhaps, gives the greatest opportunity to gain experience of traveling around the world and learn how to make your flight the most comfortable. The BestLife edition has collected nine life hacks from four active airline employees, thanks to which you can get the most out of your trip.

1. Fold clothes instead of folding them.

“Tightly folded clothes in a suitcase frees up more space for bulky items such as hair styling tools, jackets and shoes,” says Frontier Airlines flight attendant Trinise Thomas. In addition, this method of packing things reduces the number of folds on clothes and it will be easier to “identify” when unpacking.

2. Pack some old things.

Experts advise taking with you a couple of already unnecessary items of clothing that you can leave along the way. Thus, you can free up space for new purchases and souvenirs. In addition, there will be no need to worry about how to pack these worn-out things again.

3. Take a compact reusable bag with you.

“Take a light but other bag, such as a shopper, and take it with you every time you go on a trip,” said Michelle Lee, an employee of the ground service. While moving from place to place, it can be used to transport souvenirs, food, water, snacks and basic necessities.

4. Take a container with a snack and pack a bottle of frozen water there.

Sometimes, due to the reduction of airline staff, waiting in eateries and shops at the airport can be long. Packing your own food in a small folding lunchbox will save you from running around and save money. In addition, you can bring your own water bottle if it is frozen.

“A bottle of frozen water can be carried through security, and it will keep your food cool throughout the day. And when it starts to melt, you can drink water,” says flight attendant Nicole Padellaro. This tip also allows you to pack more diverse foods, including those that taste better in a cool form.

5. Download the airline app.

The thought of downloading another app may cause a few sighs, but having an airline app on your phone is quite useful, at least for a while.

Check-in, tracking of your luggage during the trip, on-board entertainment and flight rebooking are available with it.

Many applications also inform about current COVID-19 protocols for airlines, airports and destinations.

6. Wear layered clothing.

If you don’t check in your luggage, one way to take a few more things with you to your destination is to wear several layers of clothing on the plane. Of course, within reason. The jacket can be held in your hands. And you can also wear a T-shirt, shirt and hoodie or sweater, as well as the bulkiest shoes. This will free up space in your hand luggage.

7. Take herbal tea bags with you.

Herbal tea is a great way to relax during a flight, especially after a tiring journey through the airport. It usually does not contain caffeine, helps to reduce anxiety and escape from thirst. Basically, airlines don’t have a good variety of drinks, and therefore it’s easier to take small tea bags with you, which you can pack in a backpack or even in your pocket. It remains only to ask the flight attendant for a cup of hot water.

8. Thank the flight attendant.

One of the fastest ways to win over flight attendants is to give them a “gift bag”. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. A short thank-you note and a small item will suffice (for example, lip balm, hand lotion, chocolate, a coffee gift card or a face mask).

“This small gesture can make a big difference and will allow you to receive privileged service, even in economy class,” says airline employee Michelle Lee.

9. Do not waste money on holders of smart devices that are attached in the cabin.

“Unfortunately, we see that many travelers take with them holders for smartphones or tablets, which are either attached or screwed to a part of the aircraft, for example, to a table, which is not allowed by the rules on board. Therefore, they will be asked to remove them,” explains Alaska Airlines flight attendant Mike Tongko. In addition, many tray tables have built-in holders that make it easy to support your devices.
