Kazakhstan has compiled a rating of the most visited national parks in 2021.
In general, 1.48 million people took in domestic national parks last year, which is a record figure for the last five years. The largest number of tourists in 2021 visited Burabai – more than 655,000 people. In second place in terms of attendance is Ile-Alatau with an indicator of 430,044 people. Kolsai Lakes are in the top three, which were visited by 160,520 vacationers. Bayanaul (56,200 people) and Kokshetau (49,045 people) also got into the top 5.
There are 14 national parks in Kazakhstan in total. The youngest of them are Tarbagatai (formed in 2018) and Ulytau (in 2021). The total area of all national parks is 2,700,000 hectares, or 1 percent of the total area of Kazakhstan.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, there was a steady increase in visits to national parks:
2017 – 1.12 million people,
2018 – 1.14 million people,
2019 – 1.38 million people.
But in 2020, only 890,000 people visited national parks due to quarantine restrictions. The largest decrease in the Bayanaul National Park is 21 times less than a year earlier. Visits to Altyn-Emel, Kokshetau, Karkaraly and Buiratau decreased by half.
